Octopus Go, Go Faster, tariffs, Electric vehicle, 5p/kWh
Octopus Go | Octopus Energy
Octopus Go is a smart tariff that offers very cheap electricity rates of about 5p/kWh for four hours every night. The cheap electricity is available between 00:30 to 04:30 every given night. The electricity tariff also offers a competitive flat rate for the other 20 hours of the day.
Octopus Go is suitably designed for Electric Vehicle (EV) users, people with Solar PV batteries, immersion or storage heaters, or anyone else that uses high consuming appliances overnight. Electric vehicle owners can charge their EV for a tenth of the price of a traditional car, and keep charging costs as low as 1p per mile.
How to Join Octopus Go
Whether you’re a brand new customer when it comes to Octopus, or you’re already an Octopus customer, you can easily join Octopus Go. Here are some of the things you should know about joining Octopus Go:
Step 1: Sign up to Octopus Energy
For you to access Octopus Go, you must be an Octopus Energy customer. If you are a customer of other electricity companies and tariffs, such as Co-op Energy, London Power, and M&S Energy, you’ll not be able to access Octopus Go. You can therefore switch to Octopus Go on an interim tariff.
You need a Smart Meter
You need a smart meter that Octopus Energy can easily connect to. If you don’t have a smart meter, Octopus Energy can easily arrange a SecureTM smart meter installation at your property without incurring any extra cost. As long as your property has a good mobile signal and you are not currently on a prepay meter, you’re eligible for a smart meter installation. However, some properties are not eligible for smart meters, therefore, make sure your building qualifies for the installation.
If you currently have a 3 phase electricity meter, you’re in a rural location or your electricity meter is in a communal cupboard. In this case, Octopus Energy will have to look into it for you and determine the case. If Octopus Energy is unable to fix a smart meter, they will inform you about it. Once the company has determined that they can install a smart meter at your property, they will get in touch with you and carry out the exercise once they have appointments in your region.
Email Confirmation
Once Energy Octopus has received half-hourly readings from your respective smart meter, they will send an email requesting you to accept the Terms and Conditions (T&Cs) of Octopus Go in order to complete the switch. The half-hourly readings may take up to 14 days to be assessed. You need to accept Terms and Conditions before you’re switched to Octopus Go. The Octopus Go T&Cs usually allow the company to take half-hourly readings from your smart meter. They also explain that you can switch away from Octopus Go to one of their other standard tariffs at any given time.
Go Charging
With a smart charger or an Ohome smart cable, you can plug your car before sleeping and your charger will only start to charge when the cheap 5p/kWh price kicks in at 00:30 to 04:30.
Go Faster Tariffs
Go Faster is a collection of tariffs that are a slight variation of the original Go. They are designed in a way that the cheaper periods can be either 3 hours, 4 hours, or 5 hours long. The starting of the 5p/kWh also doesn’t have to be between 00:30 to 04:30 but can start as early as 8:30 pm and go all the way to 01:30 am.
Since the discounted period has different lengths from the original Go tariff, the discounted pricing can either be higher or lower than 5p/kWh. The flat rate outside the discounted period usually remains unchanged across all the variations of Go and Go Faster. Therefore, you have the chance to choose your preferred time from a Go Faster tariff if the 00:30 to 04:30 hours are not convenient for you. The following are some of the options available for the Go Faster tariff:
Option 1: Take a 3-hour Go period at 4.5p/kWh, select a start time of 20.30, 21.30, 22.30, 23.30, 00.30, 01.30, 02.30 or 03.30.
Option 2: Take a 4-hour Go period at 5.0p/kWh, select a start time of 20.30, 21.30, 22.30, 23.30, 00.30, 01.30 or 02.30.
Option 3: Take a 5-hour Go period at 5.5p/kWh and select a start time of 20.30, 21.30, 22.30, 23.30, 00.30 or 01.30.
There are about 21 variations on the Octopus Go Faster tariff and the standard tariff also varies from one region to another. The names of the respective tariffs are usually based on time and duration.
